Tampere road & gravel crew
KIERROS is a road and gravel cycling crew based in Tampere, Finland. These are social rides, a bit harder than an easy Sunday spin, but the company and the coffee are what it is really about. This is the short version in English. Everything else, the rides, routes and cafés, lives on the Finnish pages.
A crew, not a club
We are a Tampere road and gravel crew. We ride a bit harder than a relaxed Sunday ride, still at a pace where the conversation keeps going. The group and the shared stop are the point. We pick routes that leave the city behind in twenty minutes, and stop for coffee along the way or once it is earned. No membership, no name list, no barrier to entry. The crew is still forming through 2026, so this is a good time to be one of the first.
Your first ride
When we post a ride, it shows the time and the start point. Come a few minutes early, find the bikes and the group, and say hi. We go over the route and set off together. Pick a ride and route that suits your legs that morning. We regroup along the way and gather at the top of the bigger climbs.
Good to know
Pace. A bit harder than an easy Sunday ride, but not a race. The exact pace depends on the leader, the route, the size of the group and the type of session, and it is easier to hang on in the draft than alone. Each ride's estimated pace is in the ride details and the Strava event. Road runs quicker, gravel more relaxed, because on gravel the surface decides, not the speed.
Keeping up. A fair worry, so here is the honest answer. Always check each ride's stated pace and pick one that suits your legs that day. For now these are the slightly faster rides, but as the crew grows there may be more relaxed paces too. Nobody is out to drop you: small differences in the bunch get evened out, sitting in the draft is easier than riding alone, and we regroup at the top of the bigger climbs. But if you genuinely cannot hold the day's pace, the honest thing is to sit up and finish the ride on your own. We do not promise to hold the whole group to a slower pace, and there is no shame in riding it solo. Come and try, you might surprise yourself.
Cost. Nothing. Just your own coffee at the stop. KIERROS is a crew, not a paid club.
Bikes. Road or gravel bike depending on the route. No e-bikes, no singlespeed or fixed, and no TT bikes on group rides, because in a bunch you need to brake and adjust your pace freely.
Safety and how we ride together
Ride at your own risk
KIERROS is an informal cycling crew. Nobody rides for you: you are responsible for your own fitness, your bike and how you ride in traffic. Come on a bike that is in order and on a ride that suits your legs. Helmet on.
Keep your insurance in order
Taking part is at your own risk, and we expect you to hold valid accident and liability insurance that covers cycling. KIERROS does not insure participants.
Bike and kit
Bring the bike that suits the ride, road or gravel depending on the route. Check the route beforehand and make sure your tyres are in order and your brakes work. No e-bikes, singlespeed or fixed on these rides. No TT bikes on group rides, because in a bunch you need to brake and adjust your pace freely. A TT ride can be arranged separately on WhatsApp if everyone setting off is fine with it.
What to bring
Spare tube and repair kit, clothing for the weather, and money for coffee. Bottle and snacks for the road of course. Keep your phone with you.
How we ride in a group
- Ride predictably. No sudden braking, no surprise moves.
- On a narrow or busy road we ride single file. Two abreast only when it is safe and does not get in the way of other traffic.
- Warn of hazards. Point out holes and gravel, call "car back" and "car front".
- Signal turns and slowing.
- Hold the agreed pace. We gather the group at the top of the bigger climbs and wait for the slowest within reason, inside the stated pace.
Traffic rules apply
We are in traffic like everyone else. We ride on the right, follow the traffic rules, and keep lights and reflectors in order in the dark. Being a group does not earn its own rules.
Weather and cancellations
We ride in rain and shine, so dress for the conditions. If a ride is cancelled, for example because of the weather, we announce it on WhatsApp.
We take photos on the rides
Style and photos are part of this. We photograph the crew on the rides, and the pictures end up on Instagram, Strava and the website. It is an inseparable part of this crew, and by taking part you accept appearing in them. If a particular photo is not okay, get in touch at [email protected].
Under 18s
Anyone under 18 is welcome only with a guardian. The guardian is responsible for the minor taking part.
Routes and GPX
Routes and GPX files are shared as they are. Roads, weather and conditions change, so check the route yourself and navigate using your own judgement. We do not guarantee the condition or safety of the routes.
Come along
Say you are coming on WhatsApp, or sign up for a ride on Strava, so we know to expect you. The rides, routes and cafés are on the Finnish pages. Questions? Email [email protected] or come to WhatsApp.
